One of my favorite urban rides in San Diego is the out and back from the Historic Gaslamp Quarter to Coronado Island and back, with some extra credit if you're feeling strong along the 54 bike path to Plaza Bonita. This is an 80% protected route along the Bayshore Bikeway heading from downtown through Barrio Logan past the shipyards in National City into Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, then along the Silver Strand and the beautiful San Diego Bay. Very few stop lights, so you can get a real burn going. Headwinds are prevalent depending on the day, but if you hang tough, you will be flying home.
One of the most extraordinary things about this ride, besides the fantastic ocean views and the historic Hotel Del Coronado, is the urban art along the way. Local artists have been commissioned to paint murals in the most exciting places. It's always fun to see what’s being worked on along the path to North Island, Coronado.
We lived in the Gaslamp for many years and enjoyed the amazing urban cycling adventures right out the front door.
